How does Zovirax 800 mg work?
The active ingredient of this medicine is acyclovir and it is an antiviral medicine. This element is a synthetic nucleoside analog, with inhibitory activity against the herpes virus such as interference with viral replication. This includes cold sores and genital herpes such as herpes simplex 1 and 2, varicella-zoster in herpes and chickenpox, and Epstein-Barr virus such as mononucleosis. These viruses take over the living cells of our body and reproduce themselves often at the expense of the host cell.
Acyclovir converts itself into an active form by the virus, and then the virus uses the active form of acyclovir instead of the nucleoside it normally uses to manufacture DNA, an important component of viral replication. The incorporation of active acyclovir into the new viral DNA works by inhibiting the production of DNA. Virally infected cells absorb acyclovir more than normal cells and then convert it to a more active form, which helps to enhance its antiviral activity.
