About Singulair (Montelukast)

Singulair (Montelukast) controls and prevents symptoms caused by asthma (such as wheezing or shortness of breath). It can also be used before exercise to prevent breathing problems (bronchospasm) during exercise. Singulair (Montelukast) is also used to relieve the symptoms of heavy fever or allergic rhinitis (sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose, etc.).

Since other allergens may be safer (see Warnings section), use this medicine to treat this condition only if other allergy medicines cannot or do not work. Do not use it to relieve sudden asthma attacks and breathing problems because it does not work immediately. If you have an asthma attack or sudden shortness of breath, use an immediate-release inhaler as prescribed.

These medicines work by causing or exacerbating asthma or allergies or blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes). In addition, it makes breathing easier by removing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.

Directions for use of Singulair (Montelukast)

Please read the dosage guide provided by your pharmacist before taking Singulair (Montelukast) and each time you take any supplements. The dosage varies depending on age or state of health. When using easy-to-chew tablets, chew well and swallow. If children cannot chew, consume, or swallow safely, consult their doctor or pharmacist.

If you are taking this substance for asthma, asthma, and allergies, take it at night. If you are taking Singulair (Montelukast) only to prevent allergies, take it in the morning or evening. If you are taking this medicine to prevent breathing problems during exercise, take it at least 2 hours before the workout. Do not take multiple doses within 24 hours. If you are already taking this medicine for asthma and allergy daily, do not take it before exercise.

I use this medication regularly to control my asthma, even with sudden asthma attacks and without asthma symptoms. Start taking the other asthma medications if your doctor directs at the. This medicine will work overtime, but that does not mean that it will suddenly relieve asthma attacks.

So, if you have asthma attacks and other breathing problems, use the rapid inhaler as prescribed. You must have an immediate-release inhaler with you.

If your asthma symptoms worsen quickly and your inhaler becomes unnecessary, see your doctor immediately. Likewise, if asthma symptoms, shortness of breath, allergy symptoms, or use of a rescue inhaler persist or worsen, seek medical attention immediately.

Warning on proper use: Do not use this medication if you have a sudden asthma attack. Also, do not use it to treat persistent asthma. This is a severe asthma attack that does not respond to inhaler treatment. This is a medical emergency. Do not use this medication instead of inhaled or oral corticosteroids for moderate to persistent asthma with daily symptoms.

Warning regarding mental health problems: This medicine may increase your risk of mental health problems. Symptoms include excitement, aggressive behaviour, hostility, anxiety, depression, or confusion. It also contains vivid dreams, hallucinations, sleep disturbances, agitation, suicidal thoughts, or suicide acts. Watch out for these symptoms if you or your child are taking this medicine. If you spot them, contact your doctor immediately.

Warning about problems with the immune system: This medicine may increase the risk of some immune issues. These include systemic eosinophilia with vasculitis and Charge-Strauss syndrome. This syndrome is caused by an increase in white blood cells in the body. This can cause flu-like symptoms, such as numbness or fever in the arms and legs, muscle pain, and cold sweats.

Who should not take Singulair (Montelukast)

Pharmacodynamics

Montelukast inhibits cysteine and leukotriene receptors in the airways. This is also evident from the fact that asthma patients can inhale LTD4-induced bronchoconstriction.

Absorption

After oral administration, montelukast is rapidly absorbed. Therefore, oral bioavailability and Cmax were not affected by a standard breakfast.

Liver cirrhosis

There is evidence that in patients with clinical manifestations of mild to moderate hepatic impairment and cirrhosis, the metabolism of montelukast is reduced and the mean AUC of montelukast increases by 41% after a single 10 Mg dose (CI at 90% = 7%; 85%). Therefore, patients having mild hepatic to moderate hepatic impairment do not need to adjust the dosage.

Renal failure

Since montelukast and its metabolites are not excreted in the urine, the pharmacokinetics of montelukast in patients with renal impairment have not been evaluated.

Patients should be advised that Singulair (Montelukast) oral administration is not suitable for treating acute asthma attacks. Appropriate short-acting inhaled beta-antagonists are needed for the treatment of asthma attacks. It has not been determined whether Singulair (Montelukast) is used daily to treat chronic asthma to prevent acute episodes of BEI.

Singulair (Montelukast) Manufacturer

Apotex Inc and Torrent Pharmaceuticals are FDA Certified and cleared for manufacturing the generic montelukast tablets.
