How does the Foracort 100 Mcg inhaler work?
Foracort 100 Inhaler is a combination of formoterol and budesonide. The budesonide present in it is a corticosteroid with predominantly glucocorticoid activity. It works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that cause inflammation in the airways and also makes breathing easier. It inhibits and simultaneously regulates inflammation by controlling the rate of protein synthesis, reducing the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes/fibroblasts, and reversing cell permeability. The second formoterol fumarate is a selective adrenergic agonist that works by relaxing the muscles in your airways and widening the breathing passages. It causes bronchodilation by catalyzing the conversion of adenosine triphosphate to cyclic-3′,5′-adenosine monophosphate resulting in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle.
Budesonide is rapidly absorbed into the lungs after inhalation and formoterol are also rapidly absorbed after inhalation. Budesonide is 85–90% bound to plasma proteins. The formoterol primary pathway in metabolism is through direct glucuronidation and O-demethylation followed by conjugation to inactive metabolites. Budesonide is excreted in the urine and feces as metabolites and formoterol is excreted mainly in the urine and some in the face.
